what's scarier than the monster under your bed? oh, the algorithm...
The algorithm is basically a system that pushes certain content based off of:
β’ what you interact with
β’ updates pushed by the developer
β’ 'likes' and 'reposts' you make
Some people might think that "The Algorithm" is harvesting every point in their lives, or out to get them. Definitely a valid concern! However, besides fear-based sentiments and blissfully uninformed legislators, there isn't much research to back this up.The best way to help reset the algorithm:
- regularly delete cookies/history in your browsers (set a schedule in your settings!)
- Within Facebook, control which Ad Partners see your content. link here

Oh how I wish they were actual cookies...
Cookies are basically a way for a corporate marketing to track who you are without getting personal information. Cookies can be activated by:
β’ Ad / Email Campaign special links + Offsite Ads
β’ Search Engine direct links via searches
β’ Anonymized data from 3rd partiesYou can clear these cookies and trackers by going and clearing your 'cache' or 'data' within your web browser settings.
Pros
β Can enable improved marketing campaigns
β Does not include any hyperspecific private information about consumers
β Can be deleted upon request in compliance with applicable law
β Data sold to ad partners is only used for algorithms, not for Personal Information hoarding
β Recommendation Systems (Like on Pinterest or Spotify) can improve based off your activity
Cons
β Can be annoying to the consumer / end user
β Ad spend for companies is often hefty
β Prices on websites can change unless you delete cookies often
I will discuss more about this in This Article feel free to reference this or any other page linked below as well!

Beep Boop... Beep Boop...
Data can be either very useful or very dangerous depending on context. Many social and e-commerce companies have violated privacy laws over the years and have had to pay gigantic fines as a result. However, some companies are not held fully liable; in fact, quite the opposite. 23AndMe was recently allowed to sell DNA and Genetic information of millions of people; even if you delete your data it is still with them.
Pros
β Old friends can find you on social media and catch up
β Algorithms can be more finely tuned to your interests over time
β More information makes your experience feel more personal (But can often also be a privacy blindspot)
Cons
β If you're in the USA and Canada, Data Brokers can post your information publicly
β Not every social media website is compliant with privacy regulations
β Privacy + Moderation efforts are not universal and can vary widely per website
